Are NFC Business Cards Safe? Privacy and Security Explained

Tap-to-share sounds like magic, so it is fair to ask how safe it is. In short: a well-designed NFC business card stores only a public link, and you control what that link shows.

Are NFC Business Cards Safe? Privacy and Security Explained

What is actually stored on the chip?

Typically just a URL to your digital profile. No passwords, no payment details, no personal files. If someone copied the link, they would only see what your public profile shows.

Very short range

NFC works within a few centimeters. Someone must hold a phone essentially against your card. That is very different from Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Can it be cloned?

Because the card contains only a public link, cloning it gives an attacker nothing more than what your profile already shows. Do not put private information in a public profile.

Control your privacy

  • Only add contact details you are comfortable sharing publicly.
  • Use a work phone and email rather than personal ones if you prefer.
  • Review your profile occasionally and remove outdated information.

Compared to a paper card

A paper card also shows your details to anyone who holds it, and you cannot change it. A digital profile gives you more control because you can edit or remove information at any time.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone steal my information by tapping my card?

They can only open the public profile link. Do not include private data on it.

Do NFC cards track me?

The card itself is a passive chip. It does not track location.

Is NFC safer than QR?

Both point to a link. Safety depends on what your profile shows and where the link goes.
